Parsec Health Sensitizing & Essence of Balanced Eating Habits Seminar

As part of Parsec’s wellness campaign 2013 we decided to kick off the year with a “Health sensitizing & essence of balanced eating habits” seminar presented on Wednesday, 31 January 2013 by Liesbet Delport, renowned South African dietician, who is co-founder of the GI Foundation of South Africa (GIFSA) and Diet Pro, as well as R&D Manager at GIFSA.

Liesbet presented an overview of the Glycemic Index and focussed on tips for a healthy eating lifestyle. She made us aware that a healthy plate of food should consist of half vegetables and salad, one quarter lean protein and the remaining quarter of low GI starch.

Liesbet shared some useful tips with us, such as: eat regular small to medium sized meals, include foods containing carbohydrates that are slowly digested (Low Glycemic Index) and high in fibre in every meal. Eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Eat saturated fats sparingly and limit salt intake. Drink lots of clean, safe water. Healthy eating combined with regular exercise supports is the basis of a healthy lifestyle.

Liesbet stressed that nutrition (also called nourishment) is the provision to cells and organisms of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life. Many common health problems can be prevented or alleviated with a healthy diet.

Liesbet has written numerous books to assist with a healthy eating regime, including, “Eat Smart and Stay slim” and “Eating for sustained energy” to mention but a few.
