This month Engineering IT hosted a panel discussion on the Electronic Engineering Industry in South Africa, with the focus on electronic manufacturing, prototyping and contract manufacturing.
The following is an excerpt from the discussion:
When the question of electronic manufacturing in South Africa, and whether we have a viable industry, pops up in a general discussion, the reaction varies from definitely yes to not at all. So the question we posed was:
Is the South African electronics industry as dead as a dodo?
The reaction from all six participants was a definite no while some did have some
qualification to their answer. Rynier van der Watt, MD of Parsec Holdings, was adamant in his response. “Certainly not… on the contrary, there are a number of successful electronic manufacturing companies in South Africa. In this modern era they play a vital role and are even internationally competitive.”
